Brighton-based Indie trio, Dutch Criminal Record, is back with a bang! After selling out shows across the UK, touring Europe, and receiving praise from prestigious publications and radio stations, the band returns with their latest high-octane single, “Oat Milk”. This vibrant new track, taken from their upcoming EP, Apathy Mixtape, showcases their signature breezy and sun-soaked sound, now infused with a new shoegaze edge. Produced by Rob Quickenden alongside the band themselves, “Oat Milk” delivers a frenzied and murky indie experience that leaves listeners craving for more.

Lead vocalist, Joe Delaney-Stone, shares the inspiration behind “Oat Milk”, which was written during the winter of 2022/23. While waiting for an online lesson, Joe experimented with chords and melodies, drawing inspiration from shoe gaze production styles reminiscent of bands like My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, and The Cure.

The lyrics of the song are based on a statement made by Suella Braverman in the House of Commons, blaming the “just stop oil” protests on certain political groups and labeling them as the “Guardian reading, tofu eating wokerati”. Using satire, the song challenges the notion that societal decay is caused by progressive ideas, vegan food, and inclusive language rather than deeper systemic issues. Joe’s vocal delivery mirrors the indifference many feel towards such rhetoric in politics, adding depth and meaning to the track.

Over the past few years, Dutch Criminal Record has experienced exponential growth, boosted in part by their popularity on TikTok, where they’ve amassed over 500k followers. With a string of successful releases on labels like Alcopop and FRTYFVE, the band has garnered more than 10 million streams on Spotify alone.

Dutch Criminal Record’s musical journey has taken them across Europe, sharing stages with acclaimed artists like Sea Girls. They’ve graced the stages of prominent festivals such as SXSW, Stag & Dagger Festival, Golden Touch Festival, Dot-2-Dot Festival, and Ynot Festival. Their captivating live performances have also led to sold-out headline shows across the UK, including memorable appearances at Camden’s PowerHaus and Rough Trade.

The band’s unapologetically frenzied sound, coupled with their thought-provoking lyrics, reflects their growth and evolution as artists. As they continue to push boundaries and challenge societal norms through their music, the future looks bright for Dutch Criminal Record. Be sure to keep an eye out for their upcoming EP and catch them live whenever they hit the stage – this is a band you don’t want to miss!
