A moment with Jasi Bella: Interview with the rising pop sensation

Square

The Swedish singer based in the UK is building a career out of upending traditional notions of gender and romance. With her latest song “Claim Me”, she continues her independent streak by telling her potential partner exactly what she wants. True to her style, it is filled with jubilant melodies, irresistible rhythms, and just the right amount of danger. We got to chat with Jasi Bella about the release of her new song.

How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard of you?
Sultry and playful pop with a narrative nature, it’s all about the story or the ‘letter’ I never sent in most cases.

You’ve just released your new track “Claim Me”, can you tell us more about it?
“Claim Me” is a playful song with an undertone of frustration. It’s about liking someone while dying for them to stop the whole mixed-signals game and just pursue you already!

What was the inspiration behind the track?
It was heavily inspired by events and stories I was told while I was in L.A. The dating scene there is wild and confusing. More so than anywhere else I’ve been anyway.

Can we expect a music video for this song? Or for an upcoming song?
I like to surprise people, but I can definitely see some exciting visuals in play for my next track, which is after ‘Claim Me’. It’s a very explosive pop song, I can’t wait to share it with everyone!

You’re from Sweden but currently live in London. Do you think that moving influenced your music in a way? Thinking about your first single « London Christmas » :))
Moving to London has definitely inspired it’s own set of songs. ‘London Christmas’ is about being stuck in London during lockdown and missing your family over the Christmas season because you can’t get to them from a different country (luckily I finally managed to get myself home the end of that December month). I have a lot of songs that touch on ‘what could’ve been’ as in – what would my life look like if I had stayed home? Would I be married? Kids? A house? People move at a different pace back home and moving here definitely changed everything.

We love your singles’ artwork! Are you the one coming up with the ideas for every new song?
Oh, I’m an absolute child! My imagination runs wild with artwork. I’m a huge space nerd and when shooting the cover for ‘Boys From Neptune’ with my all time favourite photographer in London – Adam Brazier – I went ‘could we…could we put me in space? Could I float? Could there be planets around me?’ and he just went ‘YES!’. It’s the same story for my single ‘Taken’. Even though it’s a personal story, in my head I see a visual of Tinkerbell ‘losing’ Peter Pan to Wendy. I was also reading a lot of fantasy books at the time and asked Adam if he could give me some fairy wings for the cover. I love a strong concept around a song so I will always go big for the artwork.

What do you want people to take from your music?
It’s fun if they care about the story but it’s even more fun if they can apply it to their own lives. Nothing makes me happier than people telling me how they can relate to the things I’ve written about.

What are your goals in music as of right now?
I want to give my growing audience A LOT of music to listen to. I want a song out there for every feeling; excitement, happiness, jealousy, rage and sorrow. Connecting with people through music is genuinely all I want. It’s what this year is all about.

Do you have any plans for 2023?
Right now I’m focusing on recording all of my best songs and hopefully a bit later on this year my catalogue will be big enough to start throwing on some sets. It’s definitely what I’m looking forward to the most!
