Sydney born, Melbourne, Australia based artist, Ella Sterland is the name and creative behind the musical project, Bares and she joins us to talk all about her first day of southern hemisphere summer single release, ‘Fruit’.
You may know Bare’s music via the success she received with her track, ‘Montage’, which gained a placement with Netflix in the cult-followed reality TV show ‘Terrace House’. She has also released two collaborations with synth-pop producer SKYEPAINT, and an acoustic EP at the height of lockdown last year.
Likened to artists such as St. Vincent, H.E.R, and Lorde, the soulful indie pop/R&B artist is a songwriter first and shares heartfelt stories through her lyrical musical creations.
Written in collaboration with Renee Stein, Bare’s latest release, ‘Fruit’ was written via Covid-19 lockdown zoom sessions and features a hooky 70’s style musical groove.
‘Fruit’ has been released 1st December 2021, as an intentional first day of summer release in the Southern Hemisphere.. The song relates to Ella’s sense of panic, as the weather begins to warm up and the efforts required to allow herself to be grateful for the seasonal fruits that are beginning to appear for sale.
“I’m definitely a winter person; I feel such a tangible sense of safety when I can rug up with a cup of tea. I always feel a looming sense of panic when the weather starts to get warm again which is possibly the combination of an innate feeling of unproductivity leading up to the end of the year- like I haven’t achieved enough, haven’t exercised enough, I haven’t spent my year wisely”

Tell us a little about your background
I’m a Sydney born, Melbourne-dwelling muso who has been paddling upstream in the music industry for almost four glorious years of bar gigs and radio plays. I’m a songwriter and singer primarily, and I’m super into Ariana Grande.
What was it that first got you into music?
I have been performing and enjoying music since day one, and it felt like it was so ingrained into my bones that I wouldn’t be able to do anything else.
I’ve been lucky to grow up in a supportive and musical family, and I’ve never had a time where it didn’t feel like a cornerstone of my existence.
How would you describe the feel of your music?
I like to make music that feels good to listen to; sonically enjoyable, but hints at a message under the surface.
I’m a big fan of blending Pop and R&B together to make a laid back and catchy tune, and most of my songs are about some sort of confusion.
You are releasing your new single, ‘Fruit’.. tell us about what inspired you to create this single.
‘Fruit’ was created from a place of trying to understand my complex feelings around warm weather, and my process of trying to not let my individual feelings of anxiety tarnish an important and inevitable seasonal change.
You talk about the first day of summer.. what does this mean to you?
Summer is pretty complicated in Australia, and as climate change brings more danger and destruction each year, and social media induced beauty obsessions make dressing comfortably a battle, and then some jerk puts needles in the strawberries, it can sometimes be hard to enjoy the season.
What is your creative process like, when you are creating your music?
I always try to approach my writing from an improvisational and natural place, letting the melodies fall where they inevitably should go, and bringing a little spice I with the chords.
I am writing all the time, my notes app is always overflowing and my voice memos are timestamped from every possible hour.
The hardest process for me is refining my ideas and feeling like they are in a place of satisfactory completion.
How has Covid-19 affected your releasing journey?
I have always done things DIY, and lockdown has really made me hone in my engineering skills and production chops, but it’s given made my music a backbone of my authentic voice at all angles, and I feel deeply apart of every step of the journey of each song.
You have also had your song, ‘Montage’ appear on the Netflix show, ‘Terrace House’.. what was your experience in your music being featured in this show?
It really blew me away to have so many people seek out my song after it appeared in the show, I’m so grateful for the support!
The clip with my song in the background is over two people having a conversation about their insecurities as musicians- which is extremely relatable for me.
If all the stars aligned, where would you ultimately like to get to with your music?
I would love to do a world tour, and I would love to meet and write with my idols.
To have the freedom to travel the world, connecting with your peers and making art together is the blueprint of my wildest dreams.
From your experience, what advice would you give to aspiring musicians?
Always stick to what you like doing, anything you’re not passionate about is going to fall flat, and always listen to Taylor’s version.
Where can people go to find your music?
Spotify and Apple music, and all social networks under Baresmusicau, or if you shout into the void I’ll probably hear that
