Florida-based darkwave project Last Grasp is back with their latest track, “Creature of Your Kind”, a captivating exploration of lust, attraction, and raw desire. Founded in 2021 by Matthew DeFeis, the band has carved out a distinctive space in the goth and darkwave scene, blending industrial energy with deathrock’s haunting guitars. With the addition of Jaysik Smith on bass and Lo Ormachea on synthesizer, Last Grasp’s sound continues to evolve, drawing on both nostalgic influences and modern sensibilities.
“Creature of Your Kind”, perfectly encapsulates the band’s genre-blending approach, paying homage to the icy textures of 80s and 90s darkwave while pushing the boundaries into contemporary realms. The track’s driving bassline and ethereal synths set a haunting tone, while the raw, gritty guitars evoke the tension and passion at the heart of the song’s themes.
From the first few notes, “Creature of Your Kind”, pulls you into a hypnotic atmosphere. The track’s atmospheric quality feels almost cinematic, like a dark romance playing out against a backdrop of shadowy, pulsating synths. DeFeis and producer Boris Stojanović have clearly mastered their remote collaboration. The result is a track that feels unified and fluid, even with its disparate elements—there’s a constant push and pull between the darker, industrial aspects and the lush, melancholic undertones of the goth genre.
Lyrically, the song explores the complex, all-consuming nature of lust, painting a picture of attraction as something both magnetic and unsettling.
