With their newest single “Pieces,” The Juice has put together an indie-pop anthem that married emotional fragility with uplifting energy, perfect for the big stages. The Juice is known for their high-energy performances and catchy hooks; thus, they deliver another powerful track that is both infectious and meaningful.
“Pieces” opens with a soft, twinkling melody before slowly easing listeners in to a boisterous chorus that feels like a collected release.
According to the frontman Joe, the single is two parts: “We wanted to write something that starts off with a gentle vibe and then builds into something big and anthemic, almost like two different songs in one.” And have they nailed that contrast. The number lures you in with its softly spoken touch, and then sweeps you up in an anthemic rush that puts your heart on quite the emotional rollercoaster. The message in this song is, in essence, a personal look at struggles that occur dealing with one’s mind. Co-founder Jack, who did the lyrics, says, “Pieces reflects my personal experiences with mental health issues in battling anxiety and going through nervous breakdowns.” The soft opening represents those darker times when anxiety weighs heavily, and as the song swells into its energetic chorus, it mirrors the resilience and fighting spirit of climbing out from under that weight.
The lyrics are frequently repeated, an increasing reminder that through the highs and the lows, we are still the same person.
This jamming in of the track’s tone into thoughtful juxtaposition makes “Pieces” resonate with raw authenticity. It’s one of those songs that speaks to anyone who has been through tough times and has come out stronger, its words and musical energy mirroring that universal journey from despair to hope.
The Juice are a fast-emerging power in indie pop, as both founded by and rounded out with brothers Joe and Jack, born in Preston, and brothers Ross and James, with Leachy on drums. United by influences from the Beatles through to the Roses in North West British music, this culminates in a way that places them head and shoulders above the rest.
With The Juice mixing in their own flavor of ska, new wave, and heavy metal, they’ve managed to carve a signature style that is at once nostalgically familiar yet refreshingly modern. Even better, the band’s name has a pretty cool origin story. Originally going by Joe and The Juice, the group eventually shed “Joe” when they realised they happened to share their name with a popular chain of coffee shops. But upon getting an excited thumbs-up from Serge of Kasabian during Y Not Festival, they decided on The Juice-a name that, at this point, feels just as electric as their sound.
“Pieces” is an anthem to anyone who has faced their own struggles and come out the other side. If you still haven’t heard of The Juice, it’s about time you start tuning in. They belong to a band with the trappings of charm, charisma, and plain old chops that will eventually stamp their mark into the indie scene and well beyond.
