Brandon Grant’s latest single, “Knowing,” gives a fresh breath to the introspective landscape of music. It’s a melodious journey capturing both the rawness and beauty of self-discovery. Titled from his debut album, “Knowing” represents Brandon Grant’s matchless storytelling and incredibly enticing musicality.
The sound begins dreamy in its atmosphere and led gently into an almost sultry mood. The clean strumming of an acoustic guitar against the spacious soundscape is very intimate in its approach. Brandon’s warm, reverbed vocals set the listener off into his world, while this voice of his, rich and emotive, walks them through the whole introspective narrative with an irresistible sincerity.
Subtler harmonies show up as the track moves along, deepening the emotional colour, and Brandon’s high register is genuinely breath-taking. His choruses are so ethereal in this song, blending fragments of frailty into the music to make the feeling of inner turmoil and reflection even more prominent. The laid-back drumbeat that kicks in grounds the whole track with a steady rhythm, acting almost as the song’s heartbeat.
“Knowing” is essentially Brandon’s journey to establishing and sustaining a healthy relationship with himself. It reveals the tension between societal expectations and personal intuition—a struggle as old as time—that goes on inside you, between the head and the heart. With his raw vocal style and enthralling acoustic guitar chord progressions, Brandon’s delivery is profoundly emotional and utterly soulful. Written, recorded, and produced solely by Brandon, the track oozes the labour and love that he puts into each detail.
Brandon Grant is a storyteller. He connects with the audience through his charisma and emotional depth on stage, while in his writing, he creates material relatable to audiences across the globe. Drawing influences from folk, indie, and soul, Brandon’s music connects intimately with listeners. It will bring across that sense of a one-on-one conversation taking place in every song. He has shared the stage with some of South Africa’s most significant, from Jeremy Loops and Prime Circle to Matthew Mole, earning a reputation for being both vulnerably honest and relatably human.
In Brandon’s words, “Knowing is the song I’m most proud of so far. Conceptually, lyrically, and production-wise. But mostly because it’s the song I’ve been the most honest and vulnerable in. I’m striving for raw authenticity in my music and, while I feel I still have a lot to learn about what that looks or sounds like for me, this song feels like a breakthrough moment in that search.”
“Knowing” almost didn’t happen. It was born out of a moment of creative frustration. Brandon tells how, toward the end of writing his album and feeling drained, he pushed himself to write one more song. “Amidst the disappointment of writing a couple of pretty bad songs, I told myself, ‘Okay, one more song. No matter how bad it is, just write.’ That’s how ‘Knowing’ came to be—a song that surprised me and tied together the whole album and its concepts all at once.
This indie folk ballad of self-discovery masquerades as a moving love song, taking listeners deep into the experience of a musical track. “Knowing” is that type of song that lets you reflect on your thoughts and assures you that self-discovery is an experience not to run away from.
