Stepping into the the ethereal world of Mazzy Star’s widely recognised song “Fade Into You” is like an entry into a sonic dreamscape where time seems to graciously stand still. But, the classic song is reinvigorated through a contemporary lens with a fresh sound that legitimately hypnotises when Edie Yvonne takes the reins.
Right from the get-go, the familiarity of the acoustic guitar strums paints a vivid picture of the original in the listener’s mind’s eye, yet there’s an undeniably fresh and invigorating air to this version. As the song unfolds, dreamy keys cascade in, painting vibrant hues over the canvas of sound. And then there’s Edie Yvonne’s voice—like whispers from another dimension, just floating, twisting and turning in their almost breathtakingly coherent tapestry of haunting and comforting.
And what makes this version by Edie Yvonne so unique is the human story behind it. 10-year-old sharing the stage with rock legends at Anna Bulbrook’s Girl School festival. That night, Edie Yvonne serenaded “Fade Into You,” not with her voice but with her soul – a performance that would bridge simple lyrics to a magical moment that would change her musical path forever.
That being said, it is this type of personal relationship that suffuses one’s cover with an added layer of depth and authenticity, making it resonate even deeper with their listeners. Adding magic behind the curtain was the production duo of Nicky Swedin & Cormac Liotta, bringing pop to the performance that was all but screaming at you to get up and dance. Together, they breathe new life into ‘Fade Into You’, casting it into the time-lost gem that now shines brilliantly on the contemporary music landscape.
“Fade Into You” is but a taste of what Edie Yvonne has in store when she releases the EP later this year. Including her rendition of “Sometimes” by No Doubt. The version of “Fade into You” by Edie Yvonne turns into a redeemed song-solace and an evergreen journey of sonic proportions.
