A moment with  high jump: Interview with the electronic dream-pop duo

Square

London-based dream-pop duo, high jump, is back with a new single titled ‘Tide Away’ featuring Jamie Maier. Comprised of Harry Martin and Rick Holland, high jump has been garnering attention with each new release.

Known for their atmospheric guitar and synth jams, high jump’s music gradually unfolds into mesmerizing tracks, enveloped by hypnotic beats and ethereal production. Drawing inspiration from artists like Jungle, Mount Kimbie, Jai Paul, and SOHN, their sound evokes a sense of transcendence reminiscent of a dream-like state. We got to chat with the duo around their latest release.

– Can you please start by telling us how high jump came to life?
We started trading demos at the start of 2023 after being friends since school. We’d both been part of different musical projects over the years and we pretty quickly started working on some bits and pieces together. At some point, the tunes felt like they could be more than bedroom demos and things started to fall into place from there.

– How would you describe your sound in 3 words?
Stayless dream pop

– Congratulations on the release of “Tide Away” featuring Jamie Maier! Can you tell us about the inspiration behind the song and how the collaboration with Jamie Maier came about?
Thank you! It’s the first time we’ve shown a quieter corner of the high jump sound so we’re really glad it’s resonating with people. Harry started Tide Away at the piano in early 2023 having spent time listening to artists like Frank Ocean and James Blake. Instead of getting side-tracked by production ideas (which can take precedence quite quickly) the composition was finished before any other layers were added, so the track maintained its first-person narrative feel. The melody needed a steely vocal to cut through the subtle arrangement, so Jamie Maier of the band Tungz kindly stepped in.

– “Tide Away” seems to explore themes of nostalgia and reconciling childhood memories with adulthood. Can you delve deeper into the lyrical inspiration behind the song and how personal experiences shaped its creation?
Lyrically, we drew upon similar themes to our previous single CLIIAL: over-
nostalgia and reconciling our view of the world as children with our view of the
world in adulthood. A morning run along the beach during a trip back home was
the visceral inspiration for Tide Away, as it seemed to encapsulate that conflict
between the ‘places I remember’ and the range of sentiments they induce.

– You’ve gained support from Spotify editorial playlists and various press outlets. How do you feel about the response to your music so far and how do you hope to further connect with your audience through your upcoming releases?
The response has been amazing – to have anyone who isn’t a friend or family connect with the music is something we aren’t taking for granted. Releasing the tunes in the first place felt like an achievement in itself, so we are really grateful for anything above and beyond that. We’re also definitely looking to put together a live show in the next few months to consolidate and show off the amount of energy and collaboration that has gone into the first few releases.

– Can you give us a glimpse into what’s next for high jump after the release of “Tide Away”? Are there any particular themes or concepts you’re excited to explore in your future projects?
We’re releasing an EP in May via Tip Top Recordings! The collection of songs are all from the same writing period so thematically it’s all linked and hopefully listeners will find some continuity and resolution along the tracklist.
