British musician and experimental producer Jasper Sommer just returned with a new EP that perfectly pushes the boundaries. ‘Memento’ is a 7-track project that represents the artist’s evolution in production and a more diverse range of sounds.
Jasper Sommer’s musical roots trace back to his father’s eclectic taste when he was exposed to a wide array of music from a young age. His musical journey started when he was playing Blink 182 songs on his brother’s guitar. This led him to form a band when he was 11 and this passion for music never left him.
Inspired by Zodiac’s production on The Weeknd’s initial EP, he delved into music production using GarageBand, marking the inception of his unique musical identity. The EP goes through the producer’s struggles with depression and feelings of inadequacy. It kicks off with “We Could Rule The Word”, a melancholic experimental journey with trippy ambient passages and a tender piano track. The following track, “Haunter”, is dark with haunting (hence the title) synths with a bold beat. The titular track, “Memento”, perfectly embodies Sommer’s signature sound with an earworm hook. The fourth track, “Show Me Your Bains (Interlude)”, shines as a short impactful interlude right in the middle. We then fall into a contemplative exploration of emotion and attachment with “Do You Love Me Now?”. The EP ends with “You Give Up Too Easily”, representative of Jack Sommer’s production and songwriting skills.
“Written, produced, mixed & mastered by myself, the mood of the EP is generally centered around my own struggles of depression and feelings of inadequacy, exploring moods from melancholy and struggle with moments of clarity, epiphanies and triumph. Some songs I started back in 2017, such as the opening and final songs. I never felt comfortable completing them until this year.” – Jasper Sommer
