Thirteen-year-old artist beyond his years, Carson Ferris, delivers an eerily relatable track called “Talkin’ To You” just in time for Halloween. Instead of singing about ghosts or witches, this young artist addresses a universal experience: the fear of directly expressing romantic feelings to someone you may or may not like and the risk of rejection.

Carson’s crisp vocals instantly draw your attention with their haunting line “You have been haunting me”. The track opens to reveal layers of delicate harmony and haunted backing vocals reminiscent of 90s boy band classics such as Backstreet Boys.

The inspiration came as he took on the daunting challenge of writing an original Halloween-inspired song for Buzzards and Bees music festival, but instead of opting for cliched werewolves or vampires, his song explored an existential terror: that of confessing romantic feelings without risk of rejection.

Producer Mykyl and mixer Adam Turley cleverly up the creepiness of “Talkin’ To You” by infusing Halloween-related elements into its production, such as Carson’s lower octave distortion or unnerving instrumentation reminiscent of horror soundtracks – while still maintaining an accessible rhythm and welcoming its unsettling undertones.

Carson himself describes this track as being about “the scariest thing possible: telling someone you like that you like them”. Everyone can relate to this fear of rejection that’s experienced universally and Carson brings it alive with an additional dose of creepy goodness that’s ideal not just for Halloween but any time when reflection on matters of heart arise.

Carson Ferris has already accomplished incredible things as an 13 year-old musician. Starting playing guitar at age 6, he quickly immersed himself into rock bands before later joining One Voice Children’s Choir and later, even during its dissolution (when Carson joined up independently again in 2020) independently creating music like “Can’t Be Without You”, featuring Trinidad Cardona.

“Talkin’ To You” captures Carson’s pop-rock style, drawing inspiration from Journey as well as OneRepublic, Ed Sheeran and Jonas Brothers among others. Carson strives to produce music which resonates with audiences of all ages, thus this song was named “Talkin’ To You”.

Carson skilfully balances adolescence and music, an impressive testament to his talent as an songwriter navigating both areas simultaneously. From haunted houses to cuddling up with pumpkin spice lattes – make sure “Talkin’ To You” makes its way onto your playlist to take you through all aspects of young love!
