We have the absolute pleasure of diving into the vibrant world of Melbourne, Australian based singer-songwriter, Gordon Holland, as he unveils his highly anticipated EP, ‘Skipping Stones On A Salt Lake.’ This musical masterpiece, comprising four captivating tracks, promises a melodic journey that will leave you yearning for more.

Recorded and Engineered by Harrie Kingston, mixed by Digby Gillings, and Mastered by Lion Dance Records, Gordon Holland set out on a mission to create a collection of new songs bursting with storytelling narratives.

“These are four songs that I wrote as a bit of a challenge to myself, I wanted to make some songs that would work at the simplest level – just me and a guitar or piano – but could still work with a full band too. And I had been thinking about writing songs about characters, I usually write from my own perspective or some variation of that, so it was a new thing to me to write all of these from other points of view. And afterwards I noticed there seemed to be a few recurring themes, things like: travel, the nature of change or absence of change and family amongst other things.” – Gordon Holland

Inspired by musical legends like Paul Kelly, Bob Evans, Julia Jacklin, and the iconic Carole King, Holland has seamlessly blended catchy hooks with introspective lyrics, resulting in a musical experience that tugs at your heartstrings.

The EP opens with a heartfelt gem titled “Palm Tree Wallpaper.” Picture this: a tender phone call between someone and their aging parent, reuniting at a cosy café after a significant absence. The protagonist, burdened with delivering unwelcome news, finds solace in the memories evoked by the patterned palm tree wallpaper. It’s a tender moment frozen in time, capturing the essence of love and nostalgia.

Prepare to embark on a sonic road trip with “Half A Tank (And They’re All Counting On Me).” This lively track is an anthem for all the free spirits out there, racing against time to reach a country town before sunset. Armed with half a tank of gas and an unwavering determination, our protagonist braves distractions on the journey. It’s a melodic reminder that life’s adventures often require courage and focus.

Next, we find ourselves in the enchanting realm of “Midnight At The Karaoke Bar.” Imagine a world where time stands still, where the same old barflies have gathered for years, pouring their hearts out on the karaoke stage. One of them, filled with wistful nostalgia, laments the end of the night while reminiscing about the countless memories created in that very spot. It’s a testament to the power of cherished moments and the beauty found in the constancy of life.

Brace yourself for an evocative experience in closing of the EP, with “Departure Lounge Blues.” Inspired by Mike McClellan’s captivating song, “I Wonder Who You Are Waiting For,” Holland invites us into the bustling setting of an airport departure lounge. In this seemingly ordinary space, lives intersect and stories unfold as people embark on journeys to distant lands. The perspective shifts to that of an airport employee, a silent observer of dreams taking flight. It’s a poignant reminder that even in the most mundane settings, extraordinary tales await.

Throughout his musical journey, Holland’s own experiences have served as a wellspring of creativity. The themes of travel, the ever-changing nature of life, and the longing for connection are intricately woven into his songs. With each heartfelt verse, he invites us to introspect, reminding us that music is a powerful medium for capturing the depths of human emotions and experiences.
