A moment with Prianca RA: Interview with the mental health advocate

Between two releases, British-Indian singer-songwriter Prianca RA sat down with us to discuss her song “Noticed”, her artistry and upcoming plans.

– Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your background?

I’m a British-Indian singer/ songwriter from Leicester. I’m 26 years old and been releasing my own music for just over a year now.

– How did you get into music, and when did you know you wanted to pursue it as a career?

Been singing ever since I could remember. I found a passion for creating my own music after going through a mental health battle – I felt a release of emotions when I wrote down how I was feeling. I hope others will be inspired by my mental health journey and I encourage people who go through their own experiences with mental health to write down how they feel or convey their emotions in art form – you never know who it can help.

– Who are some of your musical influences, and how have they inspired your music?

Halsey and JuiceWRLD – how they’re both so open with talking about their darkest feelings and bring them to light in their songs.

– Can you walk us through the creative process of your latest track “Noticed”?

Sure – it’s a 6 minute song because I wanted to take write a whole song about the first moment I had depression all the way through to what I feel now. The first moment I realised I had depression was when my grandma asked: ‘you’re depressed aren’t you?’ I absorbed what she was saying and then I burst out crying I was 19 years old at the time. I’ve gone through a rollercoaster of experiences since then. I’m still on anti-depressants but I’m living my life now, I say in the last verse, ‘I see a glimmer of hope/ I am starting to smile again’ – I have a busy life and even though it’s so hard to get through the day sometimes, my depression doesn’t define me, it doesn’t debilitate me. I love laughing so much to the point where my sides hurt with my family and friends and I can manage the hard times better than before when depression was that dreaded condition I couldn’t face dealing with.

– How do you stay motivated and inspired to continue making music?

I always say as long as I have feelings that I want to document, I’ll be inspired somehow. I’ll have different genres of music I want to explore. Recently I featured on a futuristic synth wave Hindi song called ‘Tere Bina’ – I love expanding my styles, I love getting involved in different projects… I guess that’s what keeps me motivated – I want to be as versatile as possible.

– What has been the biggest challenge you have faced as a musician, and how did you overcome it?

The biggest challenge I’ve faced so far is finance. There’s a lot I want to do but it costs money! The aim is to keep making money and investing in my music… and learning how to master different revenue streams to start building a business and fanbase.

– What are your future goals and plans for your music career?

live shows, live streams, a whole album and a music video!
