Jewelia Celebrates The Life Of The ‘Average’ With Single, ‘Second Best’

Introducing London, United Kingdom based pop artist, Jewelia.

On a journey of exploration within the realm of pop music, from art pop with psychedelic undertones, to bedroom pop, to disco pop and pop rock, with a 90’s nostalgic aesthetic, Jewelia began sharing her music with her audience in 2020 by sharing a new song on the 20th of each month.

As a result, her YouTube channel now has a consistent 20,000 monthly listeners.

The latest single release from Jewelia, and taster of what is to come from her upcoming album ‘Strong In My Own Way’, ‘Second best’ tells a story of living in a society of celebration of the ‘American Dream’, yet feeling inadequate with your own life being ‘average’.

From a young age, we watch stories of success against all odds and are besotted with the chosen one, while getting accustomed to look down on the average people and their struggles – the irony being, of course, that we are them. We are told that we can achieve anything, if only we try hard enough. As inspiring as this sounds, it also implies that we only have ourselves to blame (regardless of systemic disadvantages, biological limits, financial difficulty etc.) for having an average life, in a world where mediocrity is viewed as being worse than utter failure. Something is messed up here, and I thought it was worth exploring.” Jewelia

The variation between the emotive fragility and the strength and conviction can be a difficult tightrope to walk, however, the balance in ‘Second Best’ is so delicately achieved.. The result is a stunning song, with a message that so many need to hear.
