Cristal B. Reminds Listeners To Speak Up For Themselves With Single, ‘Do You Regret It?’

Square

We are joined by United States based singer/songwriter, Cristal B. in the light of her single release, ‘Do You Regret It?’.

Inspired by the likes of Adele, Lana Del Rey and Taylor Swift, Cristal B. began exploring the art and expression of music as a young child, through songwriting, performing in musicals, playing guitar and piano, and more recently exploring the art of production.

For trained nurse, Cristal B., songwriting is a form of therapy. She is raw, true and authentic in her lyricism and expression and has a desire to create a safe space for her listeners to also heal and grow through her music.

The latest single by Cristal B., ‘Do You Regret It’ is all about the experience and emotions, following the ending of a difficult and toxic relationship. It’s a reminder to listeners of the importance of speaking up for yourself and not being afraid to tell your side of the story.

“[Do You Regret It?] is me taking back my narrative. I was always the nice girl who let people step all over me in relationships. I didn’t defend myself because I felt shame and embarrassment, even when the things that were said about me weren’t true. I was made to feel like I was crazy and like I imagined what happened. This is me finally telling my side of the story.” – Cristal B.

Would you like to start by telling us a little about your background?

I grew up in a very musical family and have been singing my whole life.

In school, I was always in choir and performed in musicals in my teens.

When I was about 13, I was really inspired by Taylor Swift to learn guitar and write my own songs.

I wasn’t great at it then, but I really loved it.

I kept that going until I went to nursing school.

That was when I stopped focusing on making music unfortunately, but I started up again in 2020.

What began your exploration of a music career?

The pandemic really took a toll on my mental health.

I’m an oncology nurse, which is already challenging as is, but the added stress of the pandemic had me dealing with constant panic attacks.

I desperately needed an outlet for all of those overwhelming feelings.

That’s how I ended up going back to songwriting and learning to produce my own songs.

It started with just one song, then I completely fell in love with making music again.

I realized I had shut out a huge part of who I am by not making music and I was really unhappy.

Once I released my first song, there was kinda no going back from that.

It felt right.

How would you describe the feel of your music?

My music is often emotional and vulnerable lyrically.

Sonically, it is usually piano-based pop with elements of soul.

It often feels a bit theatrical or cinematic.

I live for dramatic strings and layered harmonies, so you definitely hear a lot of that in my songs.

You have recently released your single, ‘Do You Regret It?’.. what was the inspiration behind the creation of this single?

“Do You Regret It?” was inspired by my experience dealing with the aftermath of a toxic relationship.

It’s such a common situation: Your toxic ex tells their side of the story to all your mutual friends, you choose to be the bigger person and brush all the ways they hurt you under the rug in an effort to save face, but one day you get sick of how skewed everyone’s perception of them is and how everyone thinks they’re this great person when in reality they’re manipulative and awful.

What does ‘Do You Regret It?’ mean to you?

“Do You Regret It?” is my way of setting the record straight and taking back the narrative.

It’s a big “screw you” to the gaslighters and manipulators of the world.

What did the creative process look like for ‘Do You Regret It?’?

I wrote most of the song on my piano first.

I was feeling really inspired that day, so it just flowed out of me pretty quickly, but I was stuck on the second verse.

I had a writing session with Dasie (also an independent pop artist) and she helped me figure out the second verse.

After that, I started working on the production, which I kept going back and forth on for a couple months.

I had even worked on a pretty different version of it with another producer friend, but ended up going back to the original demo I had produced.

Getting the production just right always takes me way longer than any other part of the creative process.

But once that was done, it was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Bryan Encalada in just two days.

Where do you find your inspiration for your music?

I find inspiration in my own life experiences, but also in other people’s experiences, tv/film, and books.

My life isn’t always that interesting, so drawing inspiration from other sources is a must.

How has Covid-19 impacted your release?

As an independent artist who makes music from home, it didn’t have a huge impact on my music.

It actually made it a bit easier for me to release music because so many people are spending time online now.

I’ve been promoting my songs on social media and performing them on livestreams.

However, I’m really looking forward to playing some live in-person shows now!

What would you like to see happen for you in your music from here?

I’m really looking forward to releasing my first EP this fall.

That’s my next big goal for this year.

My main priority is to keep releasing music consistently and keep connecting with people who love music as much as I do.

What is one message you would like to share with your fans?

Thank you for being here and for listening to my music.

There is so much more to come and I appreciate your patience!
