Residing in Brixton, United Kingdom, singer/songwriter, Silas Armstrong joins us to talk all about his latest EP release, ‘So Much For Love’.
The year of 2021, in the height of the pandemic saw Silas Armstrong debut his solo music career into the public eye, with the release of his debut EP about his estranged father. Since that time, he has hit the ground running, having released two EPs, five singles and three remixes and amassed a large following in the process.
Despite being at the beginning of his solo career, the music industry is definitely not a stranger to Silas Armstrong. His musical history combines working with artists such as Tom Walker, The Script, The Wombats and Rick Astley, starting his own successful children’s music company, ITS Music, working and performing as a part of the Brixton Chamber Orchestra and having drummed for Kid Champion, playing keyboards in Youth Club, performed Glastonbury and toured Europe supporting Panic at the Disco.
Silas Armstrong’s latest EP release, ‘So Much For Love’ is a raw and stripped back, emotive expression of heartbreak and love lost. The tracks feature Silas playing the piano and singing live in a heart wrenching performance that will have you carried away into a world of emotion.
The warmth and rawness of Silas Armstrong’s vocals, combined with the live piano create a simplicity that has the power to stop you in your tracks, hanging onto every word sung.
This is a must listen album that will leave you wanting to listen over again.
You can listen to ‘So Much For Love’ below:
Would you like to start by telling us a little about yourself?
I’m a singer songwriter from Brixton, London.
I’ve surrounded myself with music since I can remember.
What was it that first inspired you to begin a career in music?
Family and friends.
I grew up around music and first played in bands from the age of 13.
I played drums and piano since school and always loved to sing.
Starting a career in music as a solo artist came much later, after years of trial and error in various different projects.
I started out wanting to write songs for other artists, then I wrote some songs so close to my heart that I had to release them under my own name.
How would you describe the feel of your music?
Soulful, energetic and full of emotion.
You have recently released your EP, ‘So Much For Love’.. what was the inspiration behind the creation of this EP?
My dad.
He’s made a lot of mistakes over the years and this EP was a way of marking my feelings in time and trying to get through to him.
What do the songs on ‘So Much For Love’ mean to you?
They’re deeply personal.
Some of them have echoes of past relationships, some our about family members, but I like to think they all ring true about people in everyone’s lives.
Particularly over the last two years when relationship of every shape have been put under considerable pressure, I wrote these songs as a coping mechanism for myself, and hopefully for others.
What did the creative process look like for ‘So Much For Love’?
A lot of these songs started out as lyrics, often written on my phone at 4am when I couldn’t sleep.
Then I move to a piano to work out the song structure, chords and melody, before creating lots of bedroom demos and loads of vocal takes.
Finally I took the best productions to the stage of mixing and mastering.
All whilst fine tuning and figuring out ideas for artwork, videos etc. Lots to constantly think about!
Where do you find your inspiration for your music?
All around me, I have to get myself in the right creative frame of mind and then I can see it wherever I look.
People and places are my favourite subjects to write about.
How has Covid-19 impacted your release?
It enabled me to focus on the project and opened up new opportunities.
I released everything digitally and used the lockdowns to film videos when the streets of London were empty.
What would you like to see happen for you in your music from here?
I’d love it to become a full time situation.
Writing and collaborating with others, playing the occasional live show when they return, but mainly focussing on songwriting and releasing music.
I’d love to hear my music on an advert or in a movie, or some random beach bar in the middle of nowhere.
What is one message you would like to share with your fans?
Thank you for listening to my music and supporting me.
Every comment, follow, stream and share helps.
I’m massively grateful just to have the privilege of making music.
Long may it continue.
Where can people find your music?
Spotify, YouTube and Instagram are my go-to platforms, but you can find me on every platform if you just search for ‘Silas Armstrong’.
