Based in Brighton, UK, country/pop singer/songwriter, Dixie Darling takes some time with Couch Mag to share all about her single release, ‘Every Time You Come Round’.
Inspired as a teenager by powerful female artists such as Deana Carter, Sheryl Crow, Dido and Taylor Swift, Dixie was driven to never hold back when telling stories throughout her music.
Within her music, Dixie Darling has a passion for creating catchy melodies, combined with heartfelt storytelling lyrics and her songs feature pure vocals that will draw you into every song.
Written during the pandemic period, Dixie Darling’s debut single, ‘Every Time You Come Round’ is all about the struggles of trying to distance yourself from that past lover that you continue to feel strong feelings for.
As you begin to listen to the song, you are straight away introduced to an inviting atmosphere filled with guitars and drums, which set the scene for Dixies sweet and pure voice to begin to tell the story of the struggles and longings of the heart.
Throughout the song, you will hear the addition of subtle strings to create an emotive, yet uplifting and positive feeling throughout the track.

Tell us a little about who you are in everyday life.
I’m a university student studying music at BIMM in Brighton.
I love it because I get to learn about the industry from professionals and meet great fellow students who are lovely and have lots of talent.
I love writing songs with other people in sessions, and I dedicate time everyday to writing by myself too because I think it’s a really important way to be in touch with my emotions and creativity.
I also love spending time with my friends, chatting over a coffee and going for long walks on the seafront.
What was it that first got you into music?
I’ve loved music since I was little.
I always loved listening to CD’S in my dad’s car.
I would write my own plays for my parents with lots of little songs in them which I would perform.
I was about 14 when I really fell in love with singing and songwriting because that’s when I began teaching myself how to play guitar.
I loved being able to play the songs by the artists that I loved and I would sing along.
It made me so happy and I knew I never wanted to stop doing it.
How would you describe the feel of your music?
My music is very sincere and I don’t hold back when writing about how I feel about a situation.
I’m more expressive in my music than I am in person.
My songs have a narrative quality; I love to tell stories in my songs which stems from my love for country music.
I’ve been told that I have a soft but emotional tone to my voice.
You have released your new single, ‘Every Time You Come Round’.. tell us a little about how this song came about.
I wrote the song during one of the lockdown periods last year when I had lots of time to think about past feelings.
I was also watching a lot of films and listening to a lot of music about different romance scenarios.
I really wanted to write a song about how easy it is to get feelings for another person, but how difficult it can be to get rid of them when things don’t go the way you hoped they would.
When I played the song to my friends, they were drawn to the chorus’ melody and the relatable quality of the lyrics that I’d written.
What do the songs or the song mean to you?
The song means so much to me for many reasons.
I wrote the song when everything felt really uncertain and I was very insecure which is something that especially in our modern world, I think a lot of people are having to deal with due to the internet, etc.
Even though this song is about having a weakness for somebody, it’s about how this doesn’t make you a weak person.
We are all humans who have hearts and we can’t choose the people who give us butterflies and make us nervous.
But we should always remember how strong and capable we are and believe in ourselves.
What is your creative process like, when you are creating your music?
It really varies.
Sometimes if I find a chord sequence that I like I will play it continuously and improvise over it whilst recording it on my phone so I don’t forget anything that I might want to use later.
Other times, I’ll write lyrics on my phone, especially when I’m out and about, and when I come home I’ll sit with my keyboard or my guitar and try to work out what music fits the lyrics best.
Has there been anything along the releasing process that you would do differently next time?
I want to have an official music video for my next single.
I have some cool ideas.
Also, I want to be more confident at pitching myself and my songs to more people because I sometimes feel quite anxious about doing this.
How has Covid-19 affected your musical journey?
It’s affected my musical journey like it has to every musician.
I had to do all my co-writing sessions on Zoom. Now that we are able to meet in person again, I’m really appreciating the experience of being in the same room as somebody when writing together again.
You really can’t beat that.
I also couldn’t gig during lockdown which lead me to have bad stage fright when I started doing it again.
But, I’m trying to make up for that time lost now.
I still wrote songs most days during lockdown, but I do prefer writing when things are happening around me because it gives me more inspiration.
What would success in your music look like to you?
I want to be an artist with an audience who feels connected to me and my music.
I want my songs to be there for people when they are having a bad day and need some lyrics to cry to, or when they feel great and want to dance around and have fun.
I want my music to help people and that’s what success looks like for me.
Is there any message that you would like to share with your audience?
I’d just like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has shown my single some love and support so far because it really means so much to me.
I’m so excited to be releasing my next single next year and hearing what everybody thinks.
