Cairns, Australia based artist, Abi Muir takes the time to share all about life on her indie pop, musical journey and the release of her single, ‘Still The Same’.
Abi’s debut single, ‘Heebiejeebies’ gained significant attention, winning the international ‘Unsigned Only’ songwriting competition and making tracks as a Queensland Music Awards finalist.
With a sound likened to that of Ariana Grande and Billie Eilish, Abi Muir draws listeners in with her stunningly emotive vocals.
Abi’s latest single, ‘Still The Same’ has a 2000’s Y2K era vibe, which tells a familiar story of a person seeing an old lover after a long passage of time.
“Still the same was inspired by a book I read where the character became immortal and lived many different lives but was still the same person on the inside. I wanted to tell this story in song and communicate the emotions and feeling of time passing, watching people you used to know grow and change, whilst you as the observer feel the same, standing still in time.” Abi Muir
Recorded and mixed by Aidan Hogg at The Plutonium in Brisbane and instrumentation by David D’Amore on drums, Peter Bullis on keys and Kyle Rohan on Guitar/Bass, the track features the sounds of Abi’s incredible vocal lines, powerful drums, piano and breath-taking strings.
This beautiful and highly emotional track will have you gripping the edge of your seat as the strings of your heart are pulled from all directions.

Tell us a little about who you are in everyday life.
I’ve just graduated school, so I’m having a little break from everything at the moment.
The last few months have been really busy with exams and performing gigs for my single launch for the first single off my debut EP.
I’ve just got a new kitten called Bo, so he’s keeping me busy, especially since we put our Christmas tree up!
I’ve just returned from a photoshoot for the Good Girl’s Guide Magazine and will feature in both their Christmas edition and the first edition of 2022 – it was my first beach photoshoot so be sure to check it out, and support this very inspirational magazine!.
What was it that first got you into music?
I’ve always been around music, growing up in the islands of Scotland, it’s part of our culture.
It feels like it’s just sorta in my blood; I don’t remember a moment I wasn’t into it.
I love discovering new artists and new music and I feel like music is what I was born to do.
How would you describe the feel of your music?
Dreamy, deep stories haha.
I love love love building thick layers of harmonies and adlibs to give it that vocally-lead, dreamy feel. and all of my songs are usually quite deep stories if you listen to the lyrics closely, I love my songs to tell stories…
Your single, ‘Heebiejeebies’ gained a lot of traction and won a couple of awards.. what do you believe led to the success of this track?
I think because it’s a sound that isn’t very common at the moment.
The structure of the song didn’t follow the average pop ‘verse, chorus, verse, chorus…’ so i think it was probably enticing for people to listen to.
It was also the first time people were getting to hear MY voice and MY artistry, rather than just covers on Youtube and the title was kinda cool :).
You have released your new single, ‘Still The Same’.. tell us a little about how this song came about how this song came about?
I had decided I wanted to try something different this year with my music and actually got together with 3 boys from the local metal band, Forest.
I had written the vocals and melody and just sent them that accapella track, and together we formed an entire musical backing.
They were great to work with and have brought some of their alternative rock influence to our live performances but throughout they kept my visions in mind and I think I kinda popifed them a little!.
What do the songs on the song mean to you?
The songs on this EP mean more than you could imagine to me.
I’ve sat with them for over a year, some for three years, and built them from nothing.
Every lyric and melody and adlib was written by me; so it’s very personal and special.
There’s 5 tracks and they are some of my favourite work I’ve ever done.
I think you can see my growth as an artist in these songs and they have a much more mature front and sound compared to my old stuff.
What is your creative process like, when you are creating your music?
I like to write to music, whether that’s just a guitar or uke, or a beat I find online, I find it much easier to write with something already there.
Although, sometimes I’ll have a single line in my head and have to build everything else around that.
It’s hard to describe my process because it really can be quite varied.
Inspiration to write comes at random times and there isn’t a set process for me when it comes to creating music, I have my little home-made recording booth in my parents garage and can sometimes sit in there for hours just playing around with ideas.
Has there been anything along the releasing process that you would do differently next time?
I’ve actually had a great time during the releasing process.
My only complaint was that I wanted the songs out the second they were mixed haha but I had to wait until after Christmas otherwise my EP would get buried under all of the famous artist’s Christmas albums and all the craziness of Christmas and New Year.
So it’s been hard waiting, but it also means its going to be exciting in 2022.
We already have a couple of big gigs lined up so be sure to follow and hopefully there may be a few festivals next year too.
What would success in your music look like to you?
Touring.
Playing my music in huge arenas for tens of thousands of people all around the world.
When I picture my dream career, that’s what I see.
Along with sitting in a studio with a cup of green tea and singing for hours haha
Is there any message that you would like to share with your audience?
You can never please everyone all the time, and there will always be haters. It’s inevitable there will always be someone who has something negative to say about you or your music but don’t focus on that, believe in yourself and chase your dream.
