Poison Oak with ‘Weekend Blues’

Square

Introducing Poison Oak, A Rock, Indie, Punk band from Far North Queensland, Australia.. A band who came together as friends and talk about being a group of friends from Townsville, who spend their time writing, recording and playing music.

The group join us to talk all about their single release, ‘Weekend Blues’, which is the second single from their upcoming third EP and comes off the back of the success of the first release of the EP, ‘Losing Ourselves’.

‘Weekend Blues’ is all about that working class feeling of excitement when the weekend arrives and then the dread that washes over you as Monday morning arrives.

Produced by Mike Myers, the catchy rock/pop style tune has a sound that can be likened to that of The Cure and will have you singing along in no time as you head out to your weekend escapades.

You can listen to ‘Weekend Blues’ below:

For those that haven’t encountered you before, would you like to give a little background to the band?

Just a bunch of mates playing some tunes! But we formed in 2019, when Ray and myself would go for a run up castle hill (Townsville), and we would just have a jam for fun afterwards.

Slowly over time we started to get some songs together, recorded them.

Then ever since we have just kept putting more songs together.

How would you describe the feel of your music?

That’s a tough, some songs are sad, some are atmospheric, some are straight down the line rock n roll, some have a punk attitude, we also some with a blues feel. So I guess it fits in the broad spectrum of indie rock.

You have recently released your single, ‘Weekend Blues’.. what was the inspiration behind the creation of this track?

The feeling of the weekend coming on Friday.

Literally, that’s when I wrote it, on a Friday afternoon.

Also, about the feeling of the weekend ending.

I love the working class feel of this track.. What do you feel corporate workers can do to reduce some of that Monday morning dread?

Hahaha, don’t drink on the weekend. And I guess maintaining hobbies, maybe go out for dinner on Sunday to soften the blow.

I usually go for a bike right the Sunday afternoon, or some exercise.

What did the creative process look like for ‘Weekend Blues’?

Well, I came up with the basic structure for the song and brought it to the band.

Everyone added their parts, and we worked on it collaboratively.

Recording it we worked with Producer Mark Myers from the Middle East, up in his studio in the table lands.

Basically, it was Ray continuously telling I need to give it more character while we were recording haha.

This is the 2nd song from your upcoming EP.. tell us a little about the EP..

Well, we are planning to release it next year around May.

We are also going to release one more single from it.

Where do you find your inspiration for your music?

Everyday life, and listening to other music.

What would you like to see happen for you in your music from here?

I guess we just want to keep writing and releasing music.

How are you managing as a band after covid-19 lockdowns have ended and with the ‘new normal’?

We are managing just the same, luckily for us up in North Queensland we were relatively untouched by co-void.

What is one message you would like to share with your fans?

Pepsi Max is better than Coke Zero
