I am honoured to introduce to you, Melbourne, Australia based artist, April Gallo, with her latest single ‘What You Lost’.
As you begin to listen to April’s music, you are completely drawn in.. She has incredible vocal ability and her music is stunningly beautiful, but the aspect that captures you the most is the intense authenticity with the emotion throughout her songs.
Behind April’s music is the intention to truly capture human experience of what it means to feel.. She looks to address all the struggles and ranges of emotions that come from our experiences of love and logic.
‘What You Lost’ is absolutely in this vain as she addresses the idea of finding light at the end of the tunnel.. the aftermath of a dark and painful heartbreak and the journey to rediscovering your sense of strength and self worth.
It’s about the pain of reflecting on toxic relationships, but also the empowerment that can be discovered by going beyond.
If you enjoy ‘What You Lost’, keep an eye out for April Gallo’s upcoming Debut Album as she “bestows her art on all those who have ever felt the deep cut of heartbreak’s sword.”

Tell us a little about your background?
I have been pursuing music in one way or another for my whole life, but have only started putting myself “out there” and pursuing a music career last year.
I sing, play piano and recently taught myself guitar.
I am also a Music teacher at a high school, which also brings me a lot of joy and fulfilment.
What was it that inspired you to make your music into a career?
I had been sitting on a lot of songs that I’d written without any knowledge of what to do next.
It wasn’t until the first Covid lockdown in March 2020, that I finally felt I had time to refine some of the songs I had written years earlier and seek out the next step to take.
Once I had about 9 songs finalised, I approached a music producer who I have been working with ever since.
I had been wanting to pursue a music career since I was a child, but it really wasn’t until last year that I felt I was ready to give 100% to my music.
How would you describe the feel of your music?
I think the feel of my music reflects the music I listen to.
I have a huge passion for jazz, blues, soul and pop music.
I particularly love strong female vocalists, such as Amy Winehouse, and more recently, Yebba & Joy Crookes.
You have released your single “What You Lost”. Are you able to tell us what inspired the single?
This song was written in a moment of despair and intense emotion, but I was able to turn those feelings into hope.
The song is about reflecting upon a past relationship, acknowledging it’s faults and the warning signs, but realising that the demise of the relationship was ultimately the other person’s loss!
A very inspirational theme through the song is about women turning pain into power. What does it mean to you to become an empowered woman?
Empowerment is extremely important to me, and a theme within a lot of my songs. I think it is so crucial and important for women to understand their self worth and power, and not be belittled by anyone else.
What would you say to that woman who may be listening to your song right now and finding themselves feeling trapped in a toxic relationship?
I would say that you are worth so much more than to be feeling trapped in a dysfunctional relationship.
Being single is not as scary as it seems, and the world is yours to achieve whatever you desire!
What is your creative process like when you are creating your music?
I feel like my best songs just flow out of me and are a true reflection of my raw emotion.
It is so amazing when the melody and lyrics just pour out, like they were just meant to coexist and be listened to by the world!
What You Lost was one of these songs, I wrote it in about 5 minutes and never made any further changes to it.
Living in Melbourne, there have definitely been some challenges around lockdowns… how have you navigated some of these challenges as a musician?
Lockdowns have been a huge setback to me, particularly as I am just trying to start my music career!
However, I have tried to use the time in lockdown to really try to refine who I am as an artist and my next steps.
Lockdown really forced me to consider everything without rushing into anything.
If all the stars aligned, what would you like your music journey to look like?
I am keen to just see where it takes me!
I am pursuing this as it truly makes me happy and fulfils me.
I want as many people to hear my music as possible, because I have poured my heart into it!
Success for me is to continue to create music and perform for as long as it makes me happy.
From your experience, what advice would you give to aspiring musicians?
Give yourself time to sit on and refine your music and then when you feel ready, take the next steps!
I do feel like you have to wait until you are ready to really give your everything.
