Plain Mister Smith emerges as a mysterious musical persona in the music scene. He just returned with a new track titled ‘New Wave Sangfroid’, featuring the soulful voice of singer-songwriter Jordan Klassen. Released under the avant-garde Popoganda Records label, this folky ballad transcends the ordinary. The song draws us into a world where ethereal synth tones meet poignant indie-pop influences.

Behind Plain Mister Smith is the composer Mark Jowett and the least we can say is that he’s not your typical indie-pop artist. The project was born from a surreal encounter – before him stood a peculiar man in a pinstriped suit with his globular head turning to look at Mark. Whether a figment of imagination or a musical persona in human form, this marked the beginning of Plain Mister Smith. Situated somewhere between Vancouver and London, the elusive musician has made a name for himself.

The track opens with warm pads and an earnest acoustic guitar, setting the stage for Smith’s crooning vocals. Channeling the dance rhythms of new wave and marrying them with soaring acoustic atmospheres, the song evokes a blend of José González’s sincerity and Elliot Smith’s mystery.

Talking about the track, the mysterious artist shares: “[It’s] the story of the life of a down and out new wave band trying to make it to the big-time in San Francisco in the 1980s and some of the crazy and lovely and insufferable things they experienced”.
