Canadian indie pop duo, Wotts takes us on a stimulating excursion with their latest single, “ALLO!” This upbeat, vibrant and bubbly track promises an epic journey through its combination of synth-pop roots with modern influences and nostalgic cues.
“ALLO!” begins with infectious beats of lively drums and a vibrant synth pop atmosphere, laying the groundwork for an irresistibly catchy, satisfyingly fun track with a hint of nostalgia. Wotts, an Ottawa-based duo comprised of vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Jayem and bassist/guitarist Ricky 100, demonstrate their ability to blend contemporary and retro influences into an irresistibly catchy sonic experience that is both familiar and unique.
Wotts has announced Petals, a three-act story EP. Petals, according to Ricky 100, depicts feelings of unrequited romance that we’ve all felt at some point in our lives: it “represents falling for someone who doesn’t reciprocate the affection, hoping others may relate a little with what I wrote here.”
“ALLO!” is produced by Jayem, Wotts’ vocal producer and multi-instrumental wizard. Drawing inspiration from contemporary artists with retro aesthetics like Pond and Djo as their guides for production, “ALLO!” draws its energy from music videos such as Pond’s video for Human Touch which spoke volumes to them both individually as well as collectively.” Jayem comments, “Because I lack musical training myself but find solace from videos, for ALLO!, my production process used music videos from these artists as inspiration; particularly Pond’s video for Human Touch; its energy spoke volumes to me and served us well!”
The track uses its energetic drumbeat and colourful analogue synths to promote positive mood-lifting, providing listeners a break from everyday stresses and strains. According to Jayem: “I’ve got no shame saying that we like making music that can lift people’s moods, even if it’s only for a minute. If someone can vibe to this song and forget about the bad stuff for a bit, that’s mission accomplished for us”
Wotts have made quite an impression already this year with five tracks already released from ‘PETALS’. The duo plans on dropping another single from the project before 2023 is over, promising listeners more explorations into new sounds. Ricky exclaims, “We’re having so much fun discovering and exploring different sounds; everything just keeps flowing out! We can’t wait to share more songs with everyone!”
