Dom Malin Tells A Story Of Not Feeling Good Enough With Single, ‘Cold Feet’

Square

Residing in Birmingham, United Kingdom, Dom Malin joins us to talk all about his latest single release, ‘Cold Feet’.

Ever since acquiring his first guitar at the age of 12, music has been a life long passion and journey, having completed a university degree in Music and working as a teacher in a creative college, as well as building his own solo music career.

Dom Malin’s signature style captivates and enchants listeners with his folk melodic style, influenced by the likes of Ben Howard, The Lumineers, Damien Rice, James Bay and Bon Iver

Dom Malin’s latest single, ‘Cold Feet’ brings out a feeling of rejection, and tells a story of never feeling good enough.. how it feels to be replaced by someone new when you felt you gave your all to someone who did not return the sentiment.

“This has been a song his students have longed for and persisted with. They can finally rest assured it is no longer restricted to live performances but will now be yours and everyone’s to enjoy in their own way.” Dom Malin

Would you like to start by telling us a little about your background?

My parents encouraged me to play music from the age of 10.

They weren’t musical themselves but they supported my ambitions.

With music being a constant in my life I went onto study professional musicianship in Bristol.

I felt privileged to be around other musicians.

They were much older than me and I think this pushed my songwriting.

The depth in their writing was something I chased, and with artists who inspired me at the time I found my lyrics were older than my years.

You’re also a teacher at a creative college.. How has this role impacted you as an artist and a songwriter?

For me, it’s about the impact I have on them.

I want to share the knowledge I didn’t have when I was their age and I want them to believe in their own talent and challenge themselves.

I want them to understand that conformity is boring and to find the unique place they belong.

How would you describe the feel of your music?

Honest, Melodic, folk which will have you reaching for the tissues while grooving to the rhythm.

You have recently released your single, ‘Cold Feet’.. what was the inspiration behind the creation of this single?

Cold Feet comes from my own personal life and acute observations of people I’ve met on my musical journey.

My songs are always a combination of conscious and sub-conscious influence and creating a shared experience.

What does ‘Cold Feet’ mean to you?

Relatable melancholy.

I want Cold Feet to be an anthem to sing when sad and to smile when it’s time to let go.

What did the creative process look like for ‘Cold Feet’?

Some songs just appear, and this was much like that.

I remember the concept coming from simple nicknames like baby, love, honey etc.. and upon reflection and based on perspective, they can no longer be applied to you by the person who used to lovingly call
you those names.
This song is actually an OG fan original and this was the right time to finally record and
release it!

All around me.

A big part of my current releases discuss the various stages of grief and heartbreak, but when I hear stories that move me and create an emotional reaction I have to drown my thoughts and create a character for people to follow, listen and learn from.

How has Covid-19 impacted your release?

Covid-19 impacted my creativity big time.

I didn’t feel as inspired to write.

My inspiration to write songs come from experiences and conversations.

The restrictions completely turned this upside down, no longer having interactions that gave me stories to write about, I had to find a way to keep on going.

That time allowed me to commit to recording and releasing songs, focusing on my social presence, and interacting with fellow musicians.

What would you like to see happen for you in your music from here?

I feel each release brings a new perspective and I learn so much through the process.

I want to continue to grow both personally and professionally and to share these unforgettable moments with my fans.

What is one message you would like to share with your fans?

I write for you.

I play for you.

And I couldn’t do it without you!

You give me a voice and without it I’m nobody.
