Indira May’s latest EP, ‘Imaginary Problems’, is an exploration of contrasting emotions and sounds. Across five tracks, the St Leonard’s-based artist navigates personal themes and inventive production, blending jazz, indie, and electronic influences.
The EP begins with “don’t feed the sharks” a psychedelic synth-pop track that’s both surreal and hypnotic. Its intricate arrangements and sultry vocals earned it recognition as “Track of the Day” by BBC Introducing Sussex & Surrey and placement in H&M stores across the UK.
From there, Indira shifts into the deeply personal “childsplay”, which addresses her experience with endometriosis. The eerie production mirrors the vulnerability of the lyrics, creating a haunting and powerful listening experience. In “STOP”, her whispery tones and dub-inspired horns merge to deliver a song that feels intimate yet dynamic, the result of a collaboration with rising producer Belfort.
The energy lifts with “dance tonight”, a playful bossanova tune that embraces quirky rhythms and sharp, witty lyrics. Featuring bold horn sections and Indira’s signature vocal flair, the track found its way into Spotify’s “Jazz UK” and “Fresh Finds” playlists, highlighting her ability to bridge traditional and modern jazz elements. The EP concludes with “you & charlie”, a poignant ballad about addiction that showcases Indira’s gift for storytelling through music, weaving deeply human narratives into her sound.
Inspired by artists like Joni Mitchell, Billie Holiday, Radiohead, and James Blake, Indira’s music combines introspective lyricism with experimentation.
As Indira May expands her artistry into DJing and music production, she continues to explore new directions, promising even more surprising and compelling music in the year ahead.
