Clara Hannigan Shares Personal Narrative with New Single ‘Parentheses’

New York-based singer-songwriter Clara Hannigan is back with her first release of 2024. With her new single, “Parentheses”, she explores love and vulnerability.

Drawing from her early influences of jazz and piano legends like James Booker and Ray Charles, and shaped by iconic singers such as Amy Winehouse and Erykah Badu, Clara’s sound is a unique fusion of jazz, soul, and contemporary pop. “Parentheses” showcases this blend.

The lyrics of “Parentheses” tell a story of longing and disappointment, capturing the complex emotions of a relationship marred by distance and misunderstanding. Clara sings about the pain of feeling sidelined: “When you put me in parentheses, never thought to mention me. Can’t believe I caught you calling.

Reflecting on her move to New York City four years ago, Clara has immersed herself in the vibrant local music scene, writing and releasing singles that showcase her evolving artistry. Her breakout moment came with “Euphoria and Nosebleeds”, a friend she made with a friend and which garnered nearly 1.2 million streams on Spotify, propelling her to fully embrace her music career.

“It’s really important for me to be intentional with each project that I do as it represents me, my life, and my journey as an artist. Self-expression is a gift that’s not lost on me, and I’m always hungry to create more, explore new genres, and continue to grow. I want to stay as authentic as possible, and I think people can tell when someone is being genuine and earnest. Music is something where we can share experiences and find community, it makes us feel less alone. When I make music and express myself, it also helps me feel more connected to the world around me.” – Clara Hannigan
